Why I Drink Apple Cider Vinegar Everyday

“Why in the world would you do that?”

It’s the response that I get most often when I tell people I drink (imbibe, consume, etc.) apple cider vinegar everyday. Admittedly, apple cider vinegar (ACV) is sour, acidic, and downright acrid.

Last summer, my chiropractor here in Des Moines first suggested that I use ACV in a “homemade Gatorade” before runs. Regular sports drinks are chock-full of sugar and the electrolytes they promise are “dead” by the time they get to you anyway. I was getting dehydrated after long runs so I thought, “Why not?”

Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar

Not to be trifled with.

I tried it (ACV, water, and honey) and loved it. I became more of a purist as the summer went on. Which finally led to the ritual you’ll see below. This is the routine I follow nearly everyday.

Apple Cider Vinegar Info

  • Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar – Don’t go anywhere else. These guys are the creme de la creme of ACV.
  • Homemade Gatorade – 2Tbsp ACV, 8 oz. water, honey to taste.
  • ACV Power Shot – 2 Tbsp ACV, 3-5 drops liquid stevia, 1 oz. water.

How has the ACV affected your teeth? Especially drinking it so potently the way you do.

Every day, I drink ACV (organic, with mother), freshly-squeezed fresh ginger (use a garlic press, it works like a charm) and freshly-squeezed citrus juice -- lemon or lime (organic -- which ever I can find). So I just add water, filling the glass to the brim and enjoy it! That "special" taste gets addictive -- trust me. FYI: I avoid the sweetener. I don't want to encourage my iron-clad penchant for sweets. In fact, instead of a glass of wine after a hard day, I prefer an ACV tonic.

GREAT tip on the ginger. I, too, have a vice-like grip on sweets. Letting one go here and there will help out tremendously. Thanks for the tip. Very helpful!

I love hearing about others who drink Braggs' ACV! I drink 2 oz of ACV (not 2 tbsp but 2 oz) with 8 oz of water twice a day (once in morning and once at dinner). I'm on my 6th gallon and swear by it.

Thanks for posting this. I'm going to give it a try. p.s. we also have a 'W' in sitting on top of our kitchen cabinets.

I'd love more detail about how you use this for running. Do you use your homemade gatorade during a long run? Or as a recovery drink?

What exactly is the Mother? Thanks for this - I'll have to try with some honey. After hearing people talk about it, I've just been drinking it straight. I don't actually mind the taste but it does get pretty overwhelming.

Only raw organic apple cider vinegar has the “mother of vinegar” that makes the vinegar so beneficial. The “mother” is made up living nutrients and bacteria. You can actually see it settled in the bottom of the bottle like sediment.
