Like many marketers, our business relies on email marketing to do a lot of the sales heavy lifting.
We use Infusionsoft to automate much of it. It works like a charm and makes life easier all around.
Word of Mouth Marketing Association states email marketing is 1350% more effective than social media marketing. So…if you’re not using email, you should be!
And you don’t need to be a for-profit business to get in on the email game, either. Nonprofits with effective email marketing strategies have a huge advantage over those that don’t.
Email works great. Until it doesn’t.
Sometimes it’s your own fault. But sometimes the guardians of the Internet (in this case, Google) are the cause.
See, Gmail rolled out a tabs feature and it messed with our delivery rate at Think Digital. Quite a bit, in fact.
The reason why is very simple: most of the email content we sent would end up in the default Promotions or Social tab. This happened to MANY marketers.
That meant our content was ending up in the same folder as spammy emails from Nigerian princes.
Thanks to these new labels, people who asked for our content weren’t getting what they signed up for. They couldn’t get what they wanted.
Why does this matter to you? Because if you rely on email marketing in any way, shape, or form, it’s likely hurting your deliverability rate as well.
Not to worry. I’ve got a fix for you.
Here’s How to Fix Your Inbox and Get Email Updates From Me
Step 1: Go Nuclear
The first thing I did when I got Gmail tabs was disable them. I totally hated them because they messed up a system I had spent considerable time building.
I didn’t want some algorithm controlling what email I saw. I could do that fine myself, thank you.
If you want to obliterate labels, follow these steps. (If you don’t like it, you can always change it back.) First click on the gear on the right-hand side of your Gmail inbox:
Next, select ’Configure Inbox’.
You’ll see a screen like this. Uncheck all the tabs like I did.
Voila! No more nasty tabs.
Step 2: Drag my email to your Primary Inbox
If you want to keep the tabs for some reason, you can just drag any email from me over to your Primary Inbox. Like this:
If you can’t readily find one, just do a search for ‘justin[@]thinkdigital.co’ or ‘justin.wise[@]thinkdigital.co’ and then drag it over. After that you’ll be set. (But make sure you remove the brackets first!)
Depending on when you read this, you may get an alert saying, “This conversation has been moved to “Primary.” Do this for future messages from justin(@)thinkdigital.co?” Then just click “Yes”.
How to make this work for your list!
Next: I want you to take these steps I’ve outlined and instruct your email list do the exact same thing for your emails.
They’ll thank you for un-sucking their inbox.
You’ll get the added bonus of showing up in more inboxes. Email marketing is powerful. But as a marketer, you have to make it work for you.
