I sat down to lunch with a friend at one my favorite spots here in Des Moines, Tartine.

They serve modern French-American cuisine in a dressed down lunch café kind-of-way. Classy food, casual atmosphere. My kind of place.

I ordered my usual, the Lox and Eggs, and sauntered over to my seat. The dish is perfection: toasted French bread, scrambled eggs, a generous sportion of lox, all garnished with white onion, capers, and parsley.

The dish arrived. I ate happily. Then, as I was nearing the end of my meal, I looked down to take another forkful and I saw this:

The Happy Lox

I was so stunned I had to take a picture. Unaltered. Not manipulated. A completely coincidental smiley face coming from my favorite meal.

Some people claim they see the Virgin Mary on pieces of toast. My claim to fame is having smiley faces show up in smoked salmon.

The point? I guess the only one worth mentioning is things aren’t always what they seem. Sometimes we’re just eating lunch. But sometimes, our lunch smiles back at us and let’s us know things are going to be alright.
