Social Media Defined

In preparation for a workshop I’ll be teaching, I ask you a simple question:

How would you define the term “social media”?

I’d love to hear your answers in the comments below!

I would say that it is both the content and the means to deliver the content to the online community.

Social Media is any technology-based forum that provides a meeting place for people and facilitates the building of human relationships and communities. It must provide the opportunity for equal access to participation for each person or group. I know of one church that has a FB page but has diminished its Social Media capability. Only authorized church officials can post to the page. While FB has social media capabilities, this church FB page is not a social media forum for the church. To the extent that equal participation in the conversation is limited, the social media reality is diminished as well.

Social Media is an online component to building personal relationships that provides continued communication a physically widespread community.
