“What are the value of blog comments?” I’ve been wrestling with this one for awhile. It seems that, when I really press myself and others, the answers come up short. Like Skee-Lo.

I wish I had a few more blog comments.

“Comments build community on your blog,” some folks say. “Comments are a great way to build traffic,” others will hypothesize. “We have blog comments because, well, we’ve always had blog comments.” Yes, I suppose that’s true. But does that mean they’re worth having?

Regardless of reasoning, I want to find out what will happen to this blog if I turn comments off for 30 days. One whole month. No comments. Will this blog die? I suppose we’ll find out.

Let’s face it: There’s a lot of BS involved in social media.

There are lots of people who talk about how to get more followers, blog subscribers and fans. There are lots of people who talk about how to make gobs of money from blogging or podcasting or email newsletters. There are even more people who will tell you social media/the Intertubes/blogging can make you rich.

Blah.

At best, this is inane advice. At worst, this is delusional thinking that can lead good people (hopefully not you) astray. Massively astray, in fact.
