TDW #022: The Benefits of Borrowing Influence
Are you tired of feeling invisible in your niche? Do you have a monetizable skill, but no one seems to take notice?
The frustration of having no seeming ability to influence decisions of your audience can crush even the most seasoned entrepreneur.
But what if I told you that you could borrow influence from someone else to increase your own?
Are you ready to turn your monetizable skill into a successful business? Want an audience full of dream clients who take action when you ask? Look no further than the power of influence. Here’s an important equation I want you to remember…
Know-How + Influence = Authority
So, let's just assume you have a monetizable skill. You know how to provide value through an offer, product, or service to another human being and they'll pay you for said value.
The more authority you have, the more money you make. So more influence = more authority = more money. But how do you grow your influence?
Enter the world of "borrowing" influence…
How To Borrow Influence
Back in 2013, when I launched my first business, I had nothing. No status, no money, and no influence. So I had to get creative. I looked to someone who had what I wanted. In this case, it was none other than Gary Vaynerchuk.
He had the business, the audience, and the influence that I craved.
So, I made a massive ask. I sent him a cold email and asked if I could come and shadow him for a day. To my complete surprise, he responded. I got to spend a whole day with Gary and his team at his offices in NYC. And it was amazing.
But I didn't stop there. I pushed my luck a bit and asked if he'd be willing to do a video interview with me to use as an opt-in to build my email list. And again, without any hesitation, he agreed.
That interview changed everything for me. My list grew by a bazillion contacts, seemingly overnight. I used that list to launch my first digital product.
Within 90 days, I was making in a month what I used to make in an entire year at my old 9-to-5 job. And none of it would have been possible without the influence of Gary Vee.
Influence is a powerful tool, and it can be borrowed, built, or bought. By borrowing someone else's influence, you can tap into their audience, business, and authority.
The Benefits of Borrowing
Borrowing influence can also be done through collaborations, partnerships, and guest appearances.
For example, if you're a graphic designer, you could reach out to a popular blogger in your industry and offer to design their next ebook cover or social media graphics. This will not only give you exposure to their audience, but it will also add credibility to your portfolio.
Another way to borrow influence is through partnerships and collaborations. Partnering with someone in your industry who has a larger following can be a great way to grow your own audience.
If you're a nutritionist, you could partner with a popular fitness influencer and create a meal plan program together. This will give you access to their audience and also show that you have credibility in the health and wellness industry.
Finally, guest appearances can also be a great way to borrow influence.
If you're a business coach, you could reach out to a popular podcast in your industry and offer to be a guest on their show. This will give you access to their audience and also show that you are an expert in your field.
Borrowing influence can be a powerful tool for launching your own business and growing your audience.
Whether it's through shadowing someone, collaborations, partnerships, or guest appearances, there are many ways to tap into someone else's audience, business, and authority.
